Melbourne has captured our hearts and secured its place among our top favorite cities worldwide. With its vibrant melting pot of cultures, this city attracts people from all corners of the globe, creating a diverse and enriching community.
When individuals choose Melbourne as their new home, they bring with them a multitude of tantalizing flavors, captivating traditions, and beautiful languages. The culinary scene in Melbourne is a testament to its cultural diversity, offering a vast array of cuisines such as dim sum, Afghan, Armenian, Thai, Indian, and Mongolian, just to name a few.
As you stroll through the city, you'll find yourself immersed in a captivating tapestry of languages. It's not uncommon to hear three different languages being spoken within a single city block. This linguistic diversity adds a unique charm to Melbourne and enhances the cultural experience on offer.
During our visit to Melbourne, we had the pleasure of exploring the city for four days. Although our time was somewhat limited, we managed to experience some of the city's most captivating attractions. As our trip approached its end, our desire to absorb as much of Melbourne as possible grew more intense.
One aspect that truly stood out to us was Melbourne's vibrant cultural scene. With a multitude of art galleries, museums, and street art, the city showcased a rich and diverse artistic heritage. A highlight was the National Gallery of Victoria, the oldest and most visited art museum in Australia, boasting an impressive collection of indigenous art and international masterpieces.
The Incredible Coffee Culture in Melbourne
If you're a coffee aficionado, Melbourne is the paradise you've been dreaming of. As the sole coffee enthusiast in my family, I couldn't help but appreciate the amazing coffee scene this city has to offer. Melbourne takes its coffee seriously, with a coffee shop seemingly on every corner. While I didn't have the chance to try them all, I did manage to sample quite a few, and let me tell you, the coffee here is exceptional.
My love for cappuccinos began during my travels in Siena, Italy, where I experienced the authentic flavors of Italian coffee. Ever since, I've been on a quest to find a cup that matches its perfection. And guess what? Melbourne's coffee comes remarkably close. The city's dedication to crafting the perfect cappuccino is evident in every sip you take.
Every morning I would go out on my own, pay a visit to a coffee shop, and drink my cappuccino while writing in my journal. I loved getting out on my own for just a little bit, having some peace and quiet, while sipping some of the world’s best coffee. I am someone who craves a little alone time and this was the perfect way for me to get my coffee fix and solitude.
In Melbourne, my favorite place was The League of Honest Coffee. Not only was the cappuccino a visual work of art but the cappuccino was delicious.

Discover the Tranquil Charms of Melbourne
With its bustling city streets and a population of over four million, Melbourne may seem like a metropolis teeming with noise and commotion. However, to our surprise, it turned out to be the epitome of serenity.
From our hotel room that overlooked Melbourne's striking skyline, we marveled at the absence of sirens blaring or cars honking. In this city, the usual cacophony we've come to associate with urban life was replaced by a blissful quietude.
Unlike other cosmopolitan hubs where constant honking and sirens are an ever-present part of the city's soundtrack, Melbourne strays from this norm. It was music to our ears, a pleasant deviation from the hustle and bustle we've grown accustomed to.
If you're planning to immerse yourself in this unique urban symphony, be sure to check out hotel deals in Victoria on www.hotelsinvictoria.net for some of the best accommodations the city has to offer, ensuring that you experience this serenity from a comfortable base.
During our stay, we took strolls through the city streets and found ourselves immersed in the tranquil ambiance. Melbourne's unique atmosphere fosters a sense of calm, making it a stark contrast to other destinations we've explored.
As the days passed, a few sirens and horns pierced the silence, reminding us that Melbourne, though not entirely devoid of noise, has successfully curbed the incessant clamor that plagues many other metropolises worldwide. It's undoubtedly one of the city's distinctive qualities.
If you're seeking an urban getaway that offers both the vibrancy of a metropolis and the luxury of tranquility, Melbourne is the perfect destination for you. Experience the rare harmony of a city that's managed to silence the chaos while retaining its cosmopolitan charm.
Discover the Melbourne Star
Immerse yourself in a captivating experience aboard the Melbourne Star, a magnificent Ferris wheel that pays homage to its London counterpart, the iconic London Eye.
Initially constructed in 2008, the Star endured a challenging journey, ultimately leading to its reconstruction and grand reopening in December 2013. This extraordinary feat exemplifies the city's determination to provide its residents and visitors with an exceptional attraction.
Nestled in the Docklands area, some may question the strategic decision to position the Melbourne Star so far from the city center. However, this seemingly remote location offers its own distinctive advantages. Unlike other popular attractions, the absence of long queues grants visitors an exclusive experience. During our memorable thirty-minute excursion, we relished having an entire pod to ourselves. Furthermore, the captivating vistas of the Melbourne skyline, unimpeded by nearby structures, left us in awe. The panoramic views we enjoyed were truly breathtaking.
Embarking on our final night in Melbourne, we couldn't resist taking one last spin on the Melbourne Star. It afforded us the perfect opportunity to bid farewell to this charming city that has captured our hearts.
With the Melbourne Star as a captivating testament to Melbourne's charm and spirit, a ride on this awe-inspiring Ferris wheel is an absolute must for anyone seeking to immerse themselves in the city's unique allure.
Elvis is Here!
While out on a walk through Melbourne, I took a detour to the cemetery. I do not know why I like visiting cemeteries so much while traveling, but I do. I find them fascinating, a look into the past. You can tell a lot about a city by visiting where the dead are buried. T
here are very old sections in the Melbourne cemetery, with tombstones dating back to the mid 1800’s. These older sections were decrepit, with crooked and cracked tombstones, weeds growing around the grave sites, iron fences that were rusted and worn. If it had not been such a sunny, pleasant day it would have been a bit spooky. Along the roads were much newer, more ornate and well taken care of graves, all Italian, all with occupants who lived between the late 1800’s to the mid 1900’s. Then, sprinkled about an even newer section, were people from all over the world, much like the ethnic diversity we have been seeing on Melbourne’s streets.
From walking around the cemetery, without consulting any history books, it looks as though Melbourne was founded as a European colony, in the early 1900’s the Italians moved in, followed by the rest of the world.
Imagine my surprise as I wandered through the cemetery, when I stumbled upon none other than the legendary Elvis Presley himself! It seemed unimaginable to find a shrine dedicated to him in this unexpected place. Wanting to quench my curiosity, I decided to dig a little deeper and discovered that the captivating memorial was actually commissioned by the Elvis Presley Fan Club of Australia back in 1977.
As I delved further into its history, I learned that this shrine is truly one-of-a-kind, the only one of its kind in all of Australia, attracting thousands of visitors each year. Elvis's resting place within the cemetery is a sight to behold. With a beautifully adorned grotto filled with vibrant flowers and heartfelt photographs, it stands as a testament to the enduring adoration people have for the King of Rock and Roll.
The Dynamic World of Street Art in Melbourne
Unlike other cities where graffiti tends to dominate marginalized areas like low-income housing, subway cars, and bridges, Melbourne has embraced street art as a vibrant part of its city center. Hosier Lane, a series of interconnected small streets, serves as an open canvas for talented graffiti artists and is a testament to the city's dedication to artistic ingenuity.
In Melbourne, graffiti is not viewed merely as a form of vandalism; it is celebrated as a unique art form that allows for the freedom of expression. Walking through the colorful and ever-changing murals on Hosier Lane, one can't help but appreciate the diversity of styles and messages conveyed by these talented artists.
Some of the artwork found here may seem whimsical, lacking a clear narrative or profound meaning. Nonetheless, they bring joy to passersby, injecting a sense of playfulness and creativity into the bustling city streets. On the other hand, certain pieces of street art carry powerful messages, serving as a platform for social commentary and sparking meaningful conversations within the community.
Hosier Lane was one of our favorite things we saw while in Melbourne. We walked through the lanes, smelling the fresh paint, watching the artists at work. There is no hiding under the cover of darkness here; artists were out in full daylight, going to work. On a fresh wall painted white or gray, several men were showing off their creativity.
Melbourne has a unique charm that captivated us during our visit. As we strolled through the vibrant streets, the colors seemed to come alive, injecting a sense of excitement into our explorations. Initially, our companions Tyler and Kara were unimpressed, worn out by the countless photo sessions that have become routine. However, the magic of Melbourne soon took hold, enticing them to unleash their creativity through a variety of playful poses.
From channeling their inner gangsters (which Kara truly excels at) to comically evading Sully, the playful monster, and even imitating the grumpy demeanor of Daffy Duck, we found ourselves immersed in an exhilarating photography adventure. One highlight was undoubtedly the opportunity to strike a pose alongside a Western character, playfully flexing our muscles in a display of bravado.
Exploring Melbourne's streets not only invigorated our senses but ignited a newfound enthusiasm for spontaneous moments of fun and self-expression. With every snap of the camera, we uncovered a new facet of this remarkable city.
On one of my coffee walks, I revisited Hosier Lane two days later. Already, it looked different. Some new art had popped up, covering up someone else’s work.
This left me wondering, for the graffiti artist, is it hard to decide where to put their art? Do they feel guilty covering up someone else’s work? And once their masterpiece is complete, is it sad knowing that a few days later their work will be gone forever, lost underneath layers of other people’s artwork?
Experience Australian Rules Football at the MCG
Prior to our arrival in Melbourne, Tim posed a common question to the locals we encountered, "What activities do you recommend in Melbourne?" The resounding response: "Catch a thrilling game of footy at the MCG."
And so, without hesitation, we indulged in this popular suggestion.
Australian rules football, also known as footy or Aussie rules, is a major pastime of Australian people. Melbourne, with its MCG, sits at the epicenter of footy. The MCG, Melbourne Cricket Ground, is the number one place to watch a footy match. This is hallowed ground for Australians. To watch a footy game here, preferably one that is a big game on a Saturday night, is like hitting the jackpot. And hit the jackpot we did.
We purchased tickets for Saturday night’s game, a rematch between the Sydney Swans and Hawthorn Hawks. These teams were in last season’s Grand Final, similar to the Super Bowl in American football. It was a huge rematch, drawing big crowds to the stadium. For us, it was a very affordable night. Our family of four attended the game for only $80 AUD ($64 USD), bargain entertainment in Australia. We were quite surprised at the price, as Australia has been one of the most expensive places we have visited. It is nice to know that they keep prices low for the fans.
Before the match commenced, my companion Tim and I took the opportunity to acquaint ourselves with the regulations. Australian rules football is a high-speed sport, characterized by extensive running, which appeared to us as a captivating combination of soccer, rugby, football, and basketball. Throughout the match, spectators enjoy indulging in beer and sampling meat pies. Although the culinary suggestion didn't particularly entice us, we decided to give the meat pie a try, although ultimately gravitating towards a classic hot dog instead.
As we observed the game's unfolding, we managed to grasp a few of the rules, yet some of the fouls and pauses in gameplay remained a perplexing enigma.
There were two features of the game that we found very interesting. When the ball goes out of bounds, the referee is the one to throw it back in. He stands with his back to field, and with an odd series of movements, launches it onto the field, leaving the players to fight for it.
Another unusual aspect is that the true time is never shown in the stadium, leaving fans and players alike wondering when the quarter was going to end. That really increases the suspense of the game! The lead bounced back and forth between the two teams, keeping fans on the edge of their seats until the final bell was blown. The fast paced nature kept Tyler and Kara interested throughout the entire game.
The Sydney Swans emerged as the champions, narrowly defeating the Hawthorn Hawks in an exhilarating match. Our experience was truly remarkable, and we extend our gratitude to all the Australians who recommended that we witness a football game while in Australia.
Whacky Left Turns
This may not be one of my favorite things about Melbourne, but the pure bizarreness of it bears mentioning.
In Australia, cars drive on the left.
In Melbourne, in order to make a right hand turn, which is against traffic, it is done from the far left lane. At first, this seems to make no sense at all.Not only do these cars need to make sure no one is coming towards them in the right lanes, but they now also have to look behind them to make sure that no one is approaching from the right. Just trying to explain it is enough to give me a headache.
As we explored Melbourne, we noticed an intriguing traffic phenomenon that caught our attention. Instead of struggling with right turns from the left lane, these clever Melburnians had devised a separate waiting zone within intersections, complete with dedicated traffic lights indicating the opportune moment to make their turn. This innovative approach effectively prevented traffic congestion within intersections, allowing the flow of vehicles to remain unhindered.
While we didn't personally experience the challenge of navigating these right turns ourselves, it was fascinating to witness the unique intricacies that make Melbourne such an engaging city. This unconventional solution to a common traffic issue served as a testament to the city's creativity and commitment to efficient urban planning.
Explore the Scenic Beauty of the Dandenongs
Have you ever heard of the Dandenongs? This unique name belongs to one of the breathtaking mountain ranges in Australia, just a short drive away from Melbourne.
The Dandenongs offer an array of activities for both locals and visitors. Embark on invigorating hikes along picturesque trails, indulge in some retail therapy at charming shops, and savor delicious meals and coffee in the cozy cafes dotting the area. From here, you will be treated to stunning vistas that allow you to admire the magnificent Melbourne skyline.
During our recent visit to the Dandenongs, my partner Tim and I had an exhilarating experience. We navigated through the enchanting maze, satisfying our cravings with mouthwatering pancakes at the delightful Flippin' Pancakes. To top it off, we couldn't resist the urge to do a bit of shopping. As cycling enthusiasts, we were thrilled to witness the cyclists conquering the mountains and zooming down the other side. It evoked a longing for the thrill of riding our own bikes once again.
So, if you're seeking natural beauty, adventure, and an escape from the bustling city life, the Dandenongs should be on your must-visit list!
Melbourne, a city known for its livability, has truly stolen our hearts. It is a must-visit destination when exploring Australia. Ensure you allocate enough time to savor the plethora of coffee shops, indulge in shopping sprees, relish remarkable dinners, and immerse yourself in a thrilling footy match. This vibrant city guarantees an adventure-filled experience where hunger and boredom are non-existent. A return trip to Melbourne is definitely on our agenda.
